Hah. I should have though of that once your reply showed the path to the 
home dir.

The very fact that the home parent dir was /u/users means that someone 
manually changed it from default /u, and manually created /u/users 
itself because no system tool does that automatically.

Making sure /u has correct permissions is probably a silly distraction 
waste of time in most cases, but anything that had to be manually 
created like /u/users absolutely needs to be checked.
