I quite agree. Proportional fonts greatly improve the readability of body
text such as a book or magazine article. Particularly a font with serifs
such as Times. They are great for titles and headings in forms etc, but
tabular data does quite well with a fixed pitch font.

I have seen fonts where the numerals were of varying widths. Never from
HP, but they exist. It's not so much of a sin on "artistic" type but is
problematic for a general typeface.
