I'm curious how this differs from other eBook readers, aside from the 
apparent ability for it to read the books aloud.

Note that our library system offers eBook and audiobook "lending".  Rather 
than going to the library and getting a physical book which needs to be 
returned, you download the book online.  Yes, many of them are DRM 
protected, but that's how they manage the "book is returned after X days" 
part of the lending, and the price you pay for it being free.
