I second the OT topic motion...like OT: Week In Revue or something... I
like the idea.
So, just to comment on your points, briefly, the banning of homemade
foodstuffs is ridiculous ranging to absurd, Obama is just lame for leaving
the UN early because his self-important arse was done speaking, the rest
of the UN delegation were a bunch of wimps for walking out rather than
slamming Armed-n-jihad down a few notches in a direct exchange, and Lohan
is just plain sad--a demonstration of a lovely set of twin justice systems
we have there...one for the rich, one for the poor.
My personal favourite is the whole Koran burning thing, which I'm almost
positive was a publicity stunt, with the on/off/on/off without specific
reasons bit. But it's the hypocrisy of the uproar on all sides. I
mean, first of all, you've got people saying that Islam is a religion
of peace, they've been misrepresented by a handful of extremists, etc.
Maybe. I'll give it a maybe, on the grounds that we "Christians" don't
exactly control our funamentalists very well either...and there was the
whole Crusades thing, and the Inquisition... So maybe. Of course, you
haven't seen recent video footage of whole Christian-oriented cities
in uproars, insanely firing fully automatic submachine guns into the
air as a riot against...well, pick something, they do it over the drop
of a hat. But even assuming that the lenient view is right, let's
just look at the burning issue. Is the reverand in question wise,
or even necessarily well-balanced and well-reasoned, not to mention
well-intentioned. Doubtful, IMNSHO. But, in -this- country, until they
pass Patriot Act 2 and take away this right as well, he technically had the
right to burn the book, as did any purported followers. So suddenly we had
half the muslim world in a rage, -threatening- our citizens, our interests,
over a symbolic act. Yet...yet...they won't even -allow- Bibles in some of
their countries, they burn our flag and our holy book on a regular basis,
and then they want us to cave when -their- sensibilities are offended?
Sorry, but screw that noise. I'm no ultra-patriot...this country is not
the one my grandfather defended in WW2...it's not even the one I grew up
in, to be honest. But I recognise that the flag and the Bible are symbols
of two groups of which I'm a part, even if a lax/default part. But that's
-all- they are...symbols. A flag or Bible gets burned, no biggie, IMHO,
you can make more. You kill someone, that's a smidge more permanent.
But there they are, the supposed members of the religion of peace,
threatening to go on yet another rampage, because their sensibilities have
been offended. No, strike that...because someone -MAY- threaten their
sensibilities--the guy didn't even HOLD the event, and there were threats
and riots (people actually -died- over this!) at the mere thought of it.
And they wonder why we fear them, and the (seeming) Islamicazation of not
only our contry, but a good number of other usually-sensible countries like
Britain. I'll tellya, I'm no fan of France, and I always laugh at a good
French-coward joke (ie., how many Frenchmen does it take to defend Paris?
nobody knows, it's never happened...). But France passing the banning of
Islamic oppressive garments showed more balls than we've demonstrated over
the course of the last seven years of full-on war in two countries. We're
fighting two countries but fear offending the majority--France actually
took on the entire establishment and put their foot down. That is -the-
first time I can remember ever respecting France--and usually I'm critical
of their elitism (like when they banned the word email for cultural purity
reasons).
Anyway...that guy had every right to hold the burning, and then Obama
weighing in on the opposing side... *sigh* Don't start me. The man keeps
weighing in on a bunch of things he shouldn't be involved in, from this,
all the way back to the professor getting arrested at his home. When he
does something actually useful, his opinion might start to matter.
Also loving the way the tax cut situation was shelved until -after-
elections. You know, cos it might actually affect votes. Bunch of
cowards, we have in office.
