I managed to avoid CVS (proper...the actual package) for years.

I got into version management with SVN.  I won't go to anything else.  SVN
is godlike.  Didn't really need a whole book, either...although one is
available freely, online.  It's good reference, but you don't have to read
the whole thing.

Actually, correction...I won't go to anything else unless a client
needs/wants me to.  In which case, it's extra revenue if I learn something
new, sure I'll learn it.  :)  But for my own edification?  No.
