It's been ages since I worked with IBM mainframes, but the last
time I did, they used EBCDIC, not ASCII.
The standard *nix ``dd'' program does provide EBCDIC<>ASCII
conversions, and I think I used that decades ago when importing
data from IBM created 8in floppy disks to Xenix.
