When Davies rebooted the programme, they reset to Series 1, with
Christopher Eccleston as Doctor #9.
When someone refers to series in relation to Doctor Who, it's almost always
referring to the rebooted segment of the franchise. The old programme was
usually referred to by season, if memory serves...like season 16 was the
Key to Time season with Tom Baker.
Canon has been largely preserved, and even expanded upon. Although,
there are some continuity issued between old and new. Usually it's to
the benefit of newer plots' writing. There are things they no longer
technically need, like the TARDIS' Real World Interface (the black void
between inner and outer doors)...unneccessary due to newer cinematography
methods--but something I feel should have been kept on, as it was actually
explained in the old version.
The Master got a -GREAT- backstory in the new version, if you watch the
whole arc. Expanded, and tragic, brilliant, and awesome all at once.
