No there's a mingw/msys version of mintty, nice stand-alone executable.

Aha now that does look like just the thing.

There is an implied "...to get what you want", since the whole point of 
the question was specifically the difference between maximized window 
and full-screen-no-window. The starting point was already beyond "select 
a big font to make the window bigger".

But I'd agree that in _practical_ terms you should just give up wanting 
that feature any more and live without.
