Yes, yes screen is eating answerback.  *sigh*  *KICK screen*

The latest versions are 8bit by default.

If -I- am the only one logging in, sure.  What if someone uses something
that doesn't do answerback, or it does do answerback but it's not defined?
Not a very robust test.  :/

8bit clean eats answerback in screen.  *grouse*

For software that I've loved for yea some 19 years, it's REALLY pissing me
off the last few days.  It really is a thing of beauty, but it's not
without its limitations.  Thankfully, the benefits vastly outweigh the
annoyances.

Actually, it does make sense in a way, that it eats the ^E.  Same reason
you can't use zmodem and friends inside screen, one presumes.  Still
annoying.
