Ken,

Had not considered the free record aspect.

As for display, these lines are displayed when run from the windows command prompt.  It has been too many years since I was on a *nix system so I don't know if the same thing is displayed when run on a *nix box.

I didn't think freechn displayed anything.  However, have you considered the 
possibility that the small file had several free records, while the large 
one had only one?
