Well, I assumed that, by what he originally said, the year would not normally change.  He specifically said that he wanted the user to only enter mmdd
Even if what you suggested would work on a real date field, it is harder to change because you have to deal with the slashes.

How is it harder than changing a pre-filled year?

If I add the "display", yes.  However, I remembered that I am not using a 
date field.  If the field is a date, then "    "&yr isn't a valid date, so 
the assignment itself fails, leaving the field blank.
