Never waste a good crisis!  :-)

Actually, printing from web is very feasible using CSS.  That being 
said, I have written PHP apps that
use HPGL to print documents and it works like a charm (I ended up 
writing a class to get the job done).

Of course, printing solutions I am referring to work well when your 
application is used by a set of
users with configurable environment.
