Well, I couldn't see you not knowing a non-gaming word I do, so I checked
because I thought I was losing it...multiple people and I have used it many
a time in that context.
Appears it's not the way I (or you) -quite- take it:
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/instantiating
Personally, I like our version better. But I can't take credit for it.
In the way I use it, creating an instance or particular incarnation of
something (in this case a program), I nicked it off someone else. Best
guess is EverQuest or World of Warcraft, where special parts of the
worlds (dungeons, guild halls, etc.) are "instances", identical but
specially created for a person or group to let them do task-specific things
without interference. I applied it to specific runtime instances of
the same binaries/images of programs without much of a second thought,
honestly.
My suspicion, based on the type of players that I hung around with in each
game, was that I nicked it from one of the more technically aware players
in reference to the Guild Hall instances in EverQuest, which appeared
something like 7 or 9 expansions in.
Heck, I'm just glad, after reading that, that you understood what I meant!
After reading the formal definition, I feel a bit ignorant--I never had
cause to look it up, as to me it's -always- meant what I meant by it...
I can't believe I never had cause to even question it before now. Unreal.
Well, now I know. And in knowing...hell, I'm gonna keep using it the way I
have been. It suits my sense of eccentricity. :)
