There are no real good substitutes for adobe products in commercial printing (once they bought macromedia it was all over.) I wasted years of my life trying to find alternatives. I believe for web design there are probably tons of alternatives.  

CMYK + SPOT printing is a different animal than RGB screen stuff. We have to deal with trapping, knockouts, overprints, spot colors, moiré patterns, bleeds, super blacks, screen angles, rosette types, total ink coverage, duotones, font licensing, effective resolutions,  etc. 

What is helping the industry is that abode opened up the PDF format to open standards last July.
