Dell has a fabulous deal on a decent new Ubuntu notebook, the Inspiron 15n:
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?CS=19&kc=6VAFF&oc=dncwzl1&dgc=CJ&cid=24471&lid=566643&acd=10495476-1260291-

It's only $299 +tax +shipping - a great deal! The only change I would make
to the basic config would be to bump up the celeron processor a level for an
intel dual core ($35). One of my coworkers was so enamored he just bought
one last week.

Stats:
Ubuntu Desktop Edition version 8.10
1Yr Ltd Warranty and Mail-In Service
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 800MHz
160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
8X CD / DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD
High Definition Audio 2.0 Integrated 10/100 Network Card
Glossy, widescreen 15.6 inch display (1366x768)
4-cell battery
High Definition Audio 2.0
VGA for connecting to an external monitor
3 USB ports
ExpressCard slot
7-in-1 flash memory reader.
