Doug,

The worst of these is ctrl-\ so put that variable in ASAP.  The X in the 
window will not hurt anything if they are at a menu, but if they are 
still writing something - it can hurt. 

Also run the freechain when everyone is out from a command prompt.

Unlock the file first.  make sure you are administrator and
*fp/lib/freechain filename

I am not convinced this can be repaired when the file is active.
