(*&^& Sony..
...typed from my shiny new $329 piece of crap eeepc which I had to get
because my $3000 Vaio TZ died of bad southbridge. Of _course_ it's just
out of warranty and of _course_ I can get a new motherboard from Hong
Kong for only $600 ! And Of _course_ I had a couple solid days of
valuable and unsaved work on it, and of _course_ I can't get at even by
taking the drive ouut because of _course_ it has to have a 1.8 inch
drive with a zif ribbon cable connector that no local retail or even pc
store sells any sort of adapter or external enclosure for so of _course_
I have to also buy a usb enclosure on-line and pay for ups overnight
because I can't really wait 2 whole weeks for the motherboard.... which
of _course_ I am getting despite, or perhaps because of, already having
invested $500 for a new screen and $130 for a new keyboard when I
damaged mine while trying to clean out spilled wine and coffee. After
this I will have effectively spent about $2000 of the original price on
the carbon fiber shell! We won't even get into the slightly more
voluntary raping by paying $200 for the high capacity battery, extra
power supplies, car power adapter, the smaller battery from some guy on
ebay who got one while in Japan on a trip.
Hell, $615 before shipping from hong kong plus about $75 total for the
special usb enclosure and overnight shipping, I almost think I might as
well just go down to the Sony store in the mall about 5 minutes away and
see if they have any TZ's still in stock and if any are stripped down
enough to compete with the $1100 to $1300 ones I see on ebay.
The total would have been the same as if I didn't buy this damned eeepc
and I'd have a vaio tz again, in the same day not even overnight.
If only anyone else made a device that was half as good. Y'know, except,
running. Even almost 2 years after the TZ came out (Heck, they're not
even in production any more) All the other devices this size have
smaller screens, thicker screens, slower cpu's, single core cpu's, NO
OPTICAL DRIVE, heavier, and they're all fatter/bulkier and just
generally suckier looking. To be fair, except for the macbook air, they
all cost under $400 vs the TZ _starts_ at $1600.
