thanks for the input and help
here are answers to the questions asked
1)
 set | egrep "(^LANG|^LC produces
LANG=en_US

2) file permissions where
    -rwxr-xr-x  1 filepro filepro 403444 Aug 12  2007 ddefine
I ran setperms it permissions are now what john said they should be
    -rwsr-xr-x  1 filepro filepro 403444 Aug 12  2007 ddefine
tried ddefine again - same result.

3)data files locations:
all files are in the standard /appl/filepro directory on 1 hard drive.

any more ideas will be appreciated
thanks

=========================
original question below:

we are running Linux filepro version 5.0.14D4
disk space is 97% free
some files i can NOT add fields using 1. - Define files
some i can
with the problem files

     i can NOT add fields using 1. - Define files
    define files looks like it works but it does not add new fields
    the map.tmp will HAVE the fields i tried to add using Define Files
    the records will NOT count down as expected
    the file will then be locked with a lockfile
    also a file will be created with the name
            filename794map
            - what is a 794
          the filename794map will contain the map with the new fields???
          the 794 fill will be in the filepro directory

end with

now some files work correctly.

Suggestions as to what to do will be appreciated.
