Thanks, Nancy. suid bit was in fact not on, so I fixed that, but since
I log in to this box as user filepro it made no difference in my case.
Looks to me like the list of filenames to be read is being assembled
incorrectly inside the program. I see the no. of errors reported = the
no. of files in the filename directory.
