xfer only likes maps

SunOS
xfer 5.0.13D4

command line:

xfer -lf /tmp/p3.xfr -t pendng

This results in a p3.xfr file containing only the map.  (Data, screens, 
reports etc. all missing.)  Running xfer interactively without command 
line flags, same result.

The logfile reads:

filePro file. Name = 'pendng'
Extent = 'map'  Type = M
Error while opening file `/u/appl/filepro/pendng/m':
       No such file or directory

Error while opening file `/u/appl/filepro/pendng/o':
       No such file or directory

Error while opening file `/u/appl/filepro/pendng/p':
       No such file or directory

Error while opening file `/u/appl/filepro/pendng/t':
       No such file or directory
