Yeah, but it can float between two extremes.  You can try and stay on top
of every latest fad that comes along and do nothing well, or you can learn
what you need to for various projects and stay -roughly- abreast of recent
developments so you're at least peripherally aware of what's available for
tasks...and save a lot of time and effort bypassing whole generations of
useless (or near-useless) crap.  :)

I've gone from installing every single linux kernel, (development or
stable), to, "Oh, we need to do this?  Let me check the latest kernel notes
and see if it's supported."  Some stuff is just overkill.  And I've long
since passed the point of youthful exuberance about testing every latest
toy into the zone where I only really give a damn about what can help me
get what I need done...done.

Erm.  Uhm.  Yeah, "No problem!"  *laugh*

Probably about the same things that I said when I was dropped into fP after
doing C for years.  Or possibly worse...perl's spoiled me silly.
