In simplest terms, it is social networking.

One can have a Facebook page and put almost anything about yourself on it.  

People find it a way to get/keep in touch with people one hasn't seen in a
long time or keep friends and family updated about ones doings.

One might call this the ultimate "video party line", reaching a huge number
of people with the least amount of effort.

That's about as neutral a response I can give you.

Is it advantageous, that depends on how one uses their Facebook page.

I know employers are starting to check these social networking sites to get
more information about prospective employees.
