HPGL - printing # character

I use HPGL to generate forms out of filePro applications every where
I get a chance. I just ran into a problem. Fact is, I am surprised
it did not happen sooner.
When users type # as part of their string value, the printing process
omits everything from that point on (from that field). As you may know,
the # is used to terminate line/text string thus it is interpreted as
such.
Say I have this line
xa="PU;PA1500,540;PD;DT#;SD1,41,2,1,4,10,5,1,6,3,7,4148;LB" < AA < "#;"
If AA were equal to
"Order #134567890"
"Order" will print but nothing beyond that ...
Is there a workaround this?
For now I am replacing "#" with "No" prior to printing but wonder if there
is a way to print #.
Thanks,
