It definitely only updates the display once per second or once per <some unit of time> or once per <something>, not every record, we can all see that plainly. So several hundred records.. I have definitely seen the record counter (in all phases, scanning/selecting/reading/processing) jump by several hundres of records at a time while processing thousands of records on a fast server with simple processing.
So I could imagine your situation.
I would have expected at least the normal rreport screen with the header/title and the bottom of screen prompts though, not a totally blank screen.
