I have had problems importing ascii data into spreadsheets as there are
often issues with the data types in columns.  My solution is to load the
exported data into a mysql table, which is then easily available to the
OpenOffice.org calc program using a jdbc connection to the mysql database.

We generally use Openoffice.org or its native Mac neoffice variant.  I have
MS-Office for Mac, but very rarely use it as OpenOffice.org does everything
I need, and has the database access which I don't think is readily
available with MS-Office.
