Haven't tried that exactly, but one thing I'd do is ensure no leading or trailing spaces, same as when you use a variable for the form. If lp is undefined and comes from getenv, probably aren't any spaces anyways.

printer name lp{""

probably left-justified already, but for sure-sure  ""{lp{""
