A "relatively" easy fallback is to set up Samba on the system and run FP
from there. Setting up basic Samba is easy. The tough part comes when
you want to add users-based securities. If you need to find a quick
solution then you'll have to hire someone to do it. It took me a couple
of months to get up to speed enough to get things working right.
(Part of my problem was that I was looking to get ACL type directory
rights and didn't realize that these weren't well implemented in the
version of Samba that came with RHEL 4 at the time.)
FP has no problem running off of Samba and there are a few people doing
it here.
