Subject: [icon-discuss] An easy, quick vi tutorial...
Hello all,
Someone on the tech list asked me privately to put up an article I wrote
long ago on vi. It was published as "Learn vi in 10 minutes" and it makes it
very easy to learn the basics of vi that quickly. I have put it up on a
site for download if anyone is interested in learning this powerful text
editor. The original article is there, and two more, an intermediate one and
an advanced one. All 3 articles are in a zip file. They are called
vi-beg.txt, vi-int.txt and vi-adv.txt. The files are designed to work as
good text files for vi so that you can use this tutorial on the Icon itself
and learn while reading them without the need of another computer. Just move
the file pointed to by the following link (which is called vi-learn.zip) to
a folder on your Icon/BP, unzip it and start reading vi-beg.txt.
The only reason I am cross posting this message to the "discuss" list as
well as the tech list is that when and if people decide they might want to
learn Linux, one of the first things needed is a good grounding in a text
editor, and vi is the best one available. Linux is operated and configured
by editing files. Not very much can be accomplished if you can not do this
somehow. The vi editor is a way to do this while just using the Icon itself
(in console mode).
Again the usual warnings that you should not use console mode until you
learn a little about Linux first.
The vi tutorial is:
