How long did you wait after killing the file and running "df"?  I have seen
systems where removing a file doesn't immediately free up the disk space.
Rather, for speed, it returns right away, with the freespace cleanup done
in the background.  For large files (you did say this file had 7 million
records), this delay may be noticeable.
