I plan on upgrading when everyone is off the system. I'll do the
upgrade once everyone is done for the day and then run an indexing script I
tested out today on a test subdirectory.

-----------------------------------------------

My standard method for upgrading clients is to, in the case of filePro 5.6
is to install to fp56\fp and leave the data file in \filepro. This does
require me to modify my startup batch file.

You can either copy your menus and config files to the appropriate new
directory or point the them in you startup file.

This will allow you to test 5.6 without removing your older version.

Again the one caveat is lockfiles. You can't run both versions.

Indexes, as Nancy says, very important.
Depends on which install you do ... as to how it upgrades.
Do you want any
new edits, printer defs, etc. (Don't know that there are
any.) The only
thing I would do is copy my global edits file somewhere safe
before the
		upgrade.The rest is totally seamless.

I *know* you don't need to hear this. I mean you are quite
obviously a
sophisticated system administartor... but you can get bit by
not making sure
that there aren't any fp executables running when you do the
install. It is
certainly worth doing thorough ps's for dreport, dclerk,
rreport, rclerk,
dxmaint, ddefine, etc.... just to make sure no one is
running anything down
inthe shipping department, etc. If an executable is in
memory at the time of
your install, I do not believe you will end up with the 5.6
version of that
program. I'm not even sure if the install puts up an error
in this
circumstance, or if it does, that it would be visible in the
rush of things
that appear on the screen. Any case, something to watch
outfor...

I'm getting ready to upgrade our FP from 4.8 to 5.6.
(FPtech got their
License manager setup to serve Windows machines from
a Linux server
running Samba. Very simple and straightforward
thanks to Ray Hoover.)

What should I be looking out for when doing the
upgrade?

(I already noticed that I had to delete a lockfile
created by 4.8 even
though there were no other users on the test
system.)
