I like the fP Room. The problem is that not everyone has the gear, nor do
they always have the environment (noisy backgrounds, can't disturb spouse,
at work and can't be talking in that fashion, etc.). Still another factor
is that unless they finally finished the Java version, it's only ActiveX,
and thus requires Windows. That's been a non-starter for Jay, I know, as
well as a few others.
I think John has it nailed for voice. I think there's room for a
less...intrusive form of realtime communication. We used to sit all day on
IRC on LinuxNET for like 5 years, and they still do even since I gave it
up. You could work, switch screens, focus on your own stuff, and flip to
it when you could. I find it very difficult to multitask with talking of
that nature going on in the background. So I'm either 100% there and doing
almost nothing else (no serious coding unless it's related to questions I'm
asking there), or I'm not there because I need to be doing other stuff.
It doesn't have the half-passive quality of text-based live chat. That's
why I always thought IRC would be a good idea.
