Baffling "System error"

I'm running a report on 4.8 that takes a total and places it in a record
in another file.

The problem I'm having is that when I do a lookup to the file on an
index that uses two fields I get a "System error has occurred" and gives
me an "Invalid argument" referencing the files map.

What is so puzzling is that I do the exact same lookup to the exact same
record in the exact same file, but from a report in another file and
that one works no problem.

I've already checked field lengths and edits and they are all
identical.  But for some reason one gives me the invalid argument while
the other does the lookup and completes all processing.  What am I missing?
