I've written perl scripts that set the comm parameters on a serial
port, starting at boot time, and running continuously.
Another solution I've used with RealWorld accounting where the
COBOL actually opened and closed the print files for every line
printed, and hard-coded forms devices bypassing the Unix spooler,
was to have a program that continually read the forms device,
sending the output to a spooler, closing the spool file after some
period of time with no activity.
