iReports is a report writer. So as long as you have Java runtime on your 
computer and a JDBC driver for MS-SQL you should have no problem writing reports.

I don't think you can call it as a service/method/class/whatever it is that they 
do in ".net land" (I forget this moment), rather it can be used free standing in 
a Windows environment.

So if you need to generate Access/CrystalReports style reports from MS-SQL, 
iReports is a pretty good choice.
