Question on a locked record

List:

I just witnessed something I thought not possible.  An individual record was
locked (Press U to update, get record box stating Record is being updated,
access denied).  The locked record was caused by the network share being
disabled while a socket to socket posting process was running.  I would have
thought the only way to resolve this would be either reboot the server or
disable the network share again.

However, the application my socket connects to sent over an update to this
exact record and the update was able to post and update the record.  It is
now no longer locked.  How is this possible?
