The honourable and venerable Mike Schwartz spoke thus:

The "product" IS 5.6-only.

However, the actual functions for sockets are present in the last few
5.0.xx versions. 5.0.14 certainly has them, and a hazy memory says it goes
back to .13 as well. Whatever version was released that first supported
fPGI supports sockets, TTBOMK.

A simple 'strings' of the *clerk binaries will tell you if the support
is there or not, if you know what you're looking for. It's there, it's
just not publicly documented. As a matter of fact, I know of and have
seen multiple systems based on 5.0.14 using sockets directly in production
environment tasks.

I heard one of the things that is in 5.6's version that is -not- in the
5.0.xx implementation is the inclusion of select(), which I believe was
asked for by someone prior to the final release of 5.6 and apparently
added. So if you want that, it's a good reason (besides documentation) to
go for the official new product.

I have no idea what the licensing says about actually using the sockets
functionality on the 5.0.xx versions, if anything. Read the EULA, or talk
to fP-Tech.
