Is it possible that files are opened and not closed?

I might suggest that a CLOSE command be issued at a point in the 
processing that is logical to the end of one routine and the beginning 
of the next.  If this slows stuff down too much, you could run a counter 
and every 100 passes issue the CLOSE and reset the counter.
