On a typical multi-user system running accounting applications, a
majority of the users would probably be in sleep mode waiting for
input from the keyboard, unless perhaps it's something where good
operators are punching 10-key entry at top speed.
I have seen accounting applications written in brain-dead
languages (can we spell Business BASIC :-) that had very high cpu
utilization as they were in polling loops waiting for keyboard
input. These applications would really suck cycles when the
user's terminal went offline without a proper logout.
