I may be on the right track, but I don't think it has
to do with you this first field business. All I am
saying is that if you have 3 J1 fields in your record,
and you are only using the first one in each record,
then your @af will always be "1".
Clearly you are using more than just the first one, so
that is not an issue here.
Try using the input index flag and specify the index
that is built upon the appropriate associated field.
