In the current versions of OpenOffice.org, it's file->new->database to
create the database connection, then F4 to open data sources in a working
spreadsheet or word processing document. Older versios of OpenOffice.org
used F4 for creation as well as normal access, and it took me a while to
figure out how to create the connection(s).
OpenOffice.org is far happier with JDBC interfaces than it is with ODBC
(which probably reflects its Sun heritage). It also groks mysql natively.
We use the same JDBC cnnnectors for mysql and postgresql on our Linux and
OS X boxes.

In Germany they first came for the Communists and I didn't speak up because
I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up
because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I
didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the
Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came
for me -- and by that time no one was left to speak up.
