UTF-8 aka Unicode is enbled by default.
There is a chance to change it during install, in the keyboard/language 
screen, which you missed by now obviously.

But it's just as easy now.

Yast, System, Language, Details,

* Locale settings for root: Yes
* unselect "Use UTF-8"
