The last so-called professional accounting system I saw that had
polling loops was written in Business BASIC, and would bring an
SCO OpenServer box to its knees if a client terminated abnormally
(can you spell Windows telnet client dying when Windows crashed).
If I remember correctly, the system was MAS90.
It is practically impossible to teach good programming style to
students that have had prior exposure to BASIC: as potential
programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of
