The ODBC implementations I've seen (e.g. unixodbc) translate ODBC
requests into the appropriate SQL for the target database.

I don't claim to be and ODBC expert.  We don't use the Microsoft
virus, Windows for anything so the only thing I've ever used ODBC
for was with StarOffice and OpenOffice.org software to connect to
mysql and postgresql databases.  Given the Java heritage of these
office suites, I find that JDBC works far more reliably than ODBC
so I haven't looked at ODBC in several years.
