-I need some advice and this list never usually short
-on offering
-advice.
-I just recently installed a new Unix server to
-replace our 1997 Unix
-server.
-(Open Server 5.0.4 to 5.0.7)
-I had purchased the filepro 5.0 upgrade several
-years ago but never
-installed it on my Unix box.
-The advice I need is what is the best way to
-transfer my filepro from
-the
-old server to the new server.
-They are both connected to a local network.
-Best way to copy files and best way to upgrade.
-Do I bring over filepro 4.8 and then upgrade to 5.0
-or do I install 5.0
-and
-just port over the data, menus and edits files?
-Should I rebuild indexes after upgrading?
-What are options for copying files from old server
-to new server?
-Thanks for your advice.

I am going to give you a longer answer than most but
please listen to it - (this is in order)
1 Set up server
2 install filePro 5.x
3 ftp your "/appl/filepro" directory to the new system
************ ON THE NEW SYSTEM *****
4 Destroy all filepro filelocks
{ find /appl/filepro -name lockfile -rm {} \; )
5 open
EVERY PIECE OF CODE AND RE SAVE IT (esc) (esc)
OPEN EVERY REPORT AND RE SAVE IT(esc) (esc)
the reports may give you an error on
opening save (esc) (esc) them it will
go away
Open every screen and save it.
You may not need to get every one but I grantee you
your boss will open the first failing file the first
day (law of averages) and walk your butt out the door.
6) RE INDEX EVERY FILE (should I say that again)
please do this by hand the batch is great but you want
to see if something fails and filePro isn't great at
letting you know that - it blinks you miss the error -
- I actually would recommend recording the structure
every index destroying them and re creating them but
I'm a fanatic
*****************************************
The good part
Close out your weekly reports - compare to old system
close out monthly report(s) - compare to old system
run every financial report - compare to old system
run a compare on every report / screen you can daily -
weekly - monthly - EVERYTHING
Don't take this lightly - there are companies out of
business for not doing these things -
If it all works you can sleep easily !!
- Any comments on what I may have overlooked please
add
There seems to be a persistent mindset - if I will
just copy the data it will be fine - I make an awfully
good living on the fact it isn't always fine and the
fixes are expensive and never fun and there are things
I would rather be doing.
