I often use the Knoppix live CDs to probe new hardware to see
what it finds for network interfaces and such.  I've also used it
to save data from corrupt Windows machines (is there any other
kind :-), copying the Windows data to external hard drives where
it's available for further processing.

There was a presentation on various LiveCD options at a Seattle
