I've used vncviewer via VPN and ssh tunnels on *nix systems.

Many years ago I played with a program that I think came as part
of the ``expect'' program which allowed one to share keyboard and
terminal with a remote system.  If I remember correctly, the name
of this was ``kibitz''.  This worked on *nix systems from xterm
logins.  It was important to insure that the geometry of both
xterms was identical.
