OT: BackupEDGE to the rescue...

Just a quick note about how great BackupEDGE is for our Unix and Linux
systems. I was transferring my very old (like 20 year) SCO system to a new
box. For a while, like a tortuous couple days I thought nothing would ever
work right. Couldn't get the changer recognized, couldn't get the cd-rom to
work properly, etc., etc. A phone call to Microlite and they helped me put
everything to rights. Most of it, in fact, probably all of it wasn't their
problem either. Of course, normally they would only support BackupEDGE but
they let me know some of the things I needed to do make it all work on the
new box and the new controller... and oddly (or not) enough, Adaptec
couldn't. :-(
Most simple gotcha, is if you are using a changer (a jukebox) for your tapes
like I do, you must enable multiple LUN support in the driver for the
adapter (which I had done) *and* you must modify the space.c file of the
driver to allow this as well. I forgot doing this as the last time I did it
was about 7 years ago! :-) Happily, Arnie at Microlite remembered this
after a awhile of us both scratching our heads... and everything is flying
back into place.
Also, he told me the trick to restoring a full backup without having the
symlinks try and resolve.... which is always a great thing when you want to
put the whole old server in an "old" directory like I always do. (I have
something like 6 different "old" directories going back to my first NCR
machine circa 1985. I would hate to actually find anything going back that
far... but it is there for posterity when he comes around.
Anyway, kudos to Microlite and their support as always. If you're in the
market for the best backup program available... they are the one to be
looking at. www.microite.com you won't be disappointed.
