Happy All Hollows Eve to All

Here I am trying to read my filePro Mailing List email and
the doorbell keeps ringing, and I get up and open the front
door and see all kinds of little (and some big) kids, dressed
up in all sorts of costumes (or not).

When I was a kid we didn't do trick or treat - we just did
the former . . .

o - soaped windows on houses and cars (if we liked the owners)

o - candled windows on houses and cars (of unliked owners)

o - put garbage cans on top of garage roofs (very unliked owners)

o - hung garbage cans on utility poles on the thingies used
by utility workers to climb them (ditto above)

I never was a pumpkin destroyer, but some kids liked to take
the jack-o-lanterns off of folk's porches or steps and smash
them in the middle of the street.

Or, this was in the days before door chimes, we'd push the
doorbell button and stick a pin in it to keep it ringing.

Ah, those were the days . . .

Bob

PS - I just remembered one more. We'd take an empty thread
spool and cut notches in the rims, then attach a string
to it and wrap the string around it. When held against
a window with an axle of some sort in the hole in middle
of the spool, and the string was pulled, we thought it
would make a noise that would scare the living daylights
out of the residents. And it did! (Or so we thought.)
