The only Winblows machine we have here is my wife's old Win98 machine which
she used for years, running Netscape for browsing and e-mail. Currently
the main thing that machine is doing is holding up the new Mac Mini I gave
her for her birthday. There's one program she still runs on the Win
machine, but as soon as we get the Mac version, we can unplug the Windows
box and get rid of the KVM switch that is sharing the monitor with the Mac.

Once we retire the win98 machine, all our desktop systems will be either
running OS X on Macs or some version of SuSE Professional (I really have to
try the Novell/SuSE desktop version one of these days).

Since I got the Mac Mini running Tiger, I've been doing 90+% of my desktop
work on that, although most of what I'm doing is still running xterms in
secure shell connections to other systems, where I'm doing development and
handling e-mail with mutt.

I'll see your 2.0.36 machine, and raise you a 2.0.35 OpenLinux box that
handles our dialup modems for uucp and fax. It's a P75. It's only been up
193 days (the UPS in that rack died so I had to reboot the three servers
that were on it).

The FreeBSD 4.8 system that hosts my e-mail has been up 471 days, and a SCO
OpenLinux 3.1.1 system has been up 485 days as has an OpenServer 5.0.6a box
that's in the same rack with the other two 471+ day uptime machines. I
have to guess that our last power failure before I got a 3KVA generator was
about 16 months ago.

Imagine if every Thursday your shoes exploded if you tied them the usual
way. This happens to us all the time with computers, and nobody thinks of
complaining.
