What, exactly, did they try, and what didn't work? And, what about
the suggestions that were not "solutions", but rather questions to
help determine what is the problem?

People aren't "upset" because you're trying to come up with a
workaround. They're "upset" because you feel the need to come
up with a workaround to a problem which you haven't tried to
solve, or even define properly.
